According to a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical cutter, which converted logs to boards with almost no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build vessels faster than any other nation, which sparked a century of Dutch naval, economic as well as artistic supremacy in Europe and the world.
