New Year Partygoers Urged to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK
Weather experts are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Continue In Spite of Forecasts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to take place, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the Met Office.
Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
Readings Forecast to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Alerts Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this indicated the weather could to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely key.
